Who may submit photos or images?
Photos and images may be submitted by the original photographer or artist, or someone who has legal standing to grant permission of use on the photographer's behalf.
What subject matter can the photos contain?
Photos should be of subject matter generally relevant and germane to this website, and one of its pages in particular.
Examples include photos of the LGBTQ Memorial site in the Hudson River Park, the West Village neighborhood, landmarks in the area, etc.
Do I need to include talent releases?
As the photographer, you assume all legal responsibility for using recognizable likenesses of real people in your photos. You should definitely have talent releases for any relevant images you submit to us. We may request talent releases prior to using a photo on the site. We may reject a photo that does not have talent releases if we deem them necessary to use of the photo on the site.
Can I submit a drawing or illustration?
Yes. You can submit an image (photo, drawing, illustration) for consideration of use on the website, as long as it is relevant to the purpose of the site. The guidelines for images other than photos are the same guidelines as for photos. The file type should be a jpg, png, or gif.
Can I submit a video?
Yes. Due to the typical file size of a video, we may request that you submit it using Dropbox or another file-sharing service. You can submit a video smaller than 40MB via our FILE UPLOAD. VIdeo file types must be either MP4 or MOV. Otherwise, please let us know that you would like to submit a video.
What are the technical requirements for images
or media I submit?
In lieu of specific technical specifications, we are looking for interesting or compelling images we can use on the site.
This allows for creative interpretation of lighting, focus, framing, and subject matter. That said, if a photo is out-of-focus, and that characteristic is a distraction, we probably will not use the photo.
The website's photo editor may crop the photo, if necessary, to fit the allocated space.
Please submit only the following file types: jpg, png, gif, mp4, or mov.
May I embed text, a credit, or a watermark
on the photo/image?
No – please do not embed any text or a watermark on the image. Any image submitted with text or a watermark may be rejected, or the embedded text/watermark may be cropped off if the image is used on the site.
How do I submit a photo/image?
Please use our FILE UPLOAD service.
You can submit up to 4 files at a time. The total size of the upload (all 4 files added together) can not exceed 40MB.
The file types must be either jpg, png, gif, mp4, or mov.
How will you use my photo/image?
If we think the photo/image merits use on the site, we will place it in the area we think best. We may ask (not require) the submitter to upload the photo/image to the LGBTQ Memorial section of Instagram, also.
May I request a photo credit?
Yes. We provide photo credits in the following form:
"Photo: Photographer Name," in an unobtrusive font size, usually beneath the photo.
Will you pay me for my photo?
No – we are not able to do that.
Can you use my photo/image without my permission?
No. In order for us to use your photo/image on the site, you must specifically grant permission to us. When you upload the photo, in your message to us, please let us know whether or not you allow the photo's free and unrestricted use on the site. Otherwise, we will not use the photo.
An easy way to do this is to include verbiage to this effect: "I, <your name>, the photographer of the photo <filename of photo>, grant permission for its free and unrestricted use on the LGBTQ Memorial website to the owners/operators of the website, as of <date - day, month, year>."
May I request that you stop using my photo/image?
Yes. We will honor that request as soon as it is feasible for us to remove the photo or image from the website.
NOTE: "Photos" and "Images" are used interchangeably in the FAQ Guidelines, but are not limited to only those terms. All pertinent guidelines apply to photos, drawings, illustrations, videos, and other media submitted to us.
