WEST VILLAGE

NEIGHBORHOOD

The West Village is a neighborhood in the western section of the larger Greenwich Village section of Lower Manhattan, New York City. Its boundaries are generally considered to be West 14th St. on the north, Greenwich Avenue on the east, Houston St. on the south, and the Hudson River on the west.

The West Village remains one of Manhattan’s most vibrant and attractive neighborhoods. With Chelsea just to the north, and the new Whitney Museum of American Art three blocks from the Memorial, the art scene is thriving.

Ongoing development of the Hudson River Park greenway, the commercial and tourism activity generated by the High Line, and development in and around the Meatpacking District has made this area a popular destination.

The neighborhood is also known as the birthplace of the gay rights movement in the US, dating from the police raid on the Stonewall Inn in 1969. It continues to be a center for World Pride events and a hub for LGBTQ culture, with the LGBT Community Center, and AIDS Memorial Park off of Greenwich Avenue, the area's Stonewall and Gay Liberation Monuments and, now, Anthony Goicolea’s LGBTQ Memorial on the Hudson.
